Tales from the Altamaha

"Tales from the Altamaha" began as a daughter’s tribute to her deceased father. This collection of stories is drawn from over 800 manuscripts written by Col. T. Ross Sharpe. Col. Sharpe’s daughter, Ms. Luray Reed, presented the Lyons Better Hometown with these writings depicting the history of the Altamaha River area. Based on the success of “Swamp Gravy” and “Reach of Song”, our community knew these manuscripts had the potential to bring similar success to our small rural town. So we turned them into a Georgia folk life play for our region! We hired a playwright and worked on the play for 6 months before bringing it to the stage. We create a new play each year using more of the stories. These plays bring to life the colorful characters from the past, the regional settlers of a five-county radius. “Tales from the Altamaha” takes the audience on a journey through the magic of the dramatic arts to experience a story of lives, loves, losses and just plain ol' gossip. Tickets go quickly. Reserve tickets by calling Lyons Better Hometown at (912) 526-6445.
